The article seeks to examine the trajectory of Caraíba, located in the outback of the state of Bahia in Brazil. It is a city designed by the Brazilian government authorities between 1976 and 1982, held to support the extraction of copper ore. During this period, other cities were built in the country with the same purpose of allowing the exploitation of the existing energy and mineral resources. The article examines the characteristics of the design of Caraíba, its ties with the geographical and cultural context and their connections with the historical circumstances of Brazil. On the one hand the article wants to present the city in those two moments (mid-60s and now), looking for motives behind the conservations and transformations of the project carried out by the architect Joaquim Guedes and his team. On the other hand, it also wants to evaluate the impact of this project on its transition from a public to a private intervention.
